Born in Istanbul in 1988, Handan Akarsu graduated from Kadıköy Anatolian High School of Fine Arts in 2006 and that same year began undergraduate studies in the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Marmara University, adding a double major in the Department of Interior Architecture in 2008. Akarsu graduated from the Department of Painting in 2010 and from the Department of Interior Architecture in 2013. Akarsu began a master’s degree in the Art and Design Program at the Institute of Fine Arts, Akdeniz University, in 2015 and successfully completed it in 2018. As of 2019, Akarsu is pursuing a Proficiency in Art doctoral degree in the Painting Program at the Institute of Fine Arts, Hacettepe University.
Handan Akarsu, who received an award in the painting category of the 71st State Painting and Sculpture Museum Competition in 2012, describes the work in these words: “I create my works as a deceptive reflection of reality, based not only on the presence of emotions and the image but also on the mind’s comprehension of feelings. In particular, by using material to determine the ‘blurring’ and ‘fading’ of an existing reality, I aim to make clear how identity, by entering the work, discovers its own existence.”
