Artists › Yeşim Şengil
Based in Ankara, Yeşim Şengil studied architecture and restoration at the Faculty of Architecture of Middle East Technical University (METU). Alongside professional work, Şengil has always been interested in the visual arts.
Şengil began making art in 2004 by taking lessons in painting technique, and has worked in watercolor, soft pastel, and oil pastel. In the paintings, Şengil tries to express an admiration for nature through plant and animal figures; Şengil has also made hundreds of portraits.
From 2009 to 2011 Şengil attended ceramics classes at the Ministry of Culture’s H. Yazıcıoğlu Studio, and in 2010 took part in Prof. C. Terwiel’s studio workshops at the Department of Ceramics, Hacettepe University Faculty of Fine Arts. In 2011 Şengil set up a personal ceramics studio in Ankara.
Şengil is a painting, sculpture, and ceramics artist recognized by the Ministry of Culture, and a member of the United Painters and Sculptors Association (BRHD). Şengil continues independent artistic work in the artist’s own studio.
Yeşim Şengil likes to express feelings and thoughts through colors and forms rather than words. The possibilities offered by different materials and the structural problems to be solved form the basis of Şengil’s work. Şengil believes that, in the sometimes stifling atmosphere of our daily lives, art and nature are islands of respite. Şengil thinks that artworks should awaken pleasant feelings in the viewer. Şengil has been recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a painting, sculpture, and ceramics artist. Şengil thinks that art is an aesthetic point of view and that the artist should stand outside such strict distinctions.
Using figures from nature, Şengil tries to express, with wit, an admiration for nature and feelings about daily life. Şengil constantly experiments with new themes and new materials.
